Effective classroom management

Classroom management strategies differ from teacher to teacher. The aim or the focus of a teacher is for the students to absorb and understand the knowledge that the teacher is giving. Each teacher has his or her own Effective classroom management system. Movies such as “To Sir with Love” demonstrate this very effectively. The teachers that follow a specific Effective classroom management will succeed in imparting education and maintaining rapport with their students as well. These are strategies that can be used for Effective classroom management.

The teachers should set unambiguous rules for what they expect out from the children.

This means that teachers should give clear instructions on what is expected from the students during their class for the Effective classroom management to last. In many cases teachers may themselves ask the students to make guidelines for the class and then stick to them. The guidelines will be usually in regard to:

Being on time.

Following the specific set of instructions given for class work and homework.

Following specific decorum and attire in the classroom that will not disrupt the working in the classroom.

Implementing the Effective classroom management for a fresh batch of students is usually easy. Usually, within the first few weeks, the procedures for doing work, decorum and attire are communicated and the practice of following it is also started. In cases where you have had to take a classroom in mid session, you may not find the time to do it. In spite of this, it is never too late to start and this can be done within a week or two after you have started teaching in the middle of the session. Your specific Effective classroom management should have procedures for:

Entry and exit from the classroom and being on time

Completing assignments and turning them on due date, work given after due date, incomplete work

Making up time and submitting assignments for being absent from the class

Lecture / project / group work / individual work / submission and presentation of assignments etc.

Disciplinary measures should also be woven along with the Effective classroom management.

This will constitute the measures for the well done work and for the work which is not completed / submitted in incomplete form/ not submitted / late submissions. A set of disciplinary measures should be instituted . In most schools, parents can be called when such disciplinary measures are taken. On the flip side, praise and recognition should also be given to those students who perform well and do their work properly. This is also one of the cornerstones of Effective classroom management.
