When should I start baby signing?

“When should I start?”, “What to begin with?”, “Isn’t now a bit too late?”...Well, these are frequently asked questions by parents who considered baby signing as an option for their baby’s education. The thing with signing is that you can begin at anytime, with whatever you like and consider to be the most important, whenever you want, and...it’s never too late.

As a lot of parents want to be close to perfection in parenting, they can get easily freaked out when it comes for trying something new for their baby. But it’s as simple as that, by baby signing you actually talk to your baby, and you can intelligibly communicate with him, find out if he’s hungry, if he wants to play, sleep, when he wants to be outside, in the park, or if he wants a certain toy. Now you should realize that signing with your baby should not give you headaches, and, furthermore, it should be a lot of fun. It’s just spending lovely, unforgettable moments with your adoring little baby.

Now, as I mentioned before, you can start baby signing whenever you want. The main problem is not when, but how should you do this. The goal here is to make your baby sign back and there are some tricks that can help you achieve this goal. First of all, don’t overwhelm your baby with hundreds of signs. Choose few of them, only the most important, the ones that are always present in your baby’s life, otherwise the baby gets tired and does not pay attention to you anymore, it’s too much out of the sudden. Choose the signs wisely, according to your baby’s reactions. Second, sign when it’s the right time. For example, you can’t sign “bird” or “dog”, “milk” or “food” when your baby is about to sleep. You can sign “bed” or “blanked”, “Teddy-bear”, “pillow”, “tired”, “sleep” or anything else that your baby may associate with bed time.

There are a lot of programs that help parents learn how to sign with their baby. You can find trainings in different approaches - books, e-books, online programs. Some of them advise you to start signing at at least 3 months or 5 months. This is only an example. The only one who decides when to start baby signing is you, there is no rule to follow when it comes to your baby’s education.
