Simple tips to build your confidence

Nobody is an expert on dating, unless you count those all-knowing characters in romantic comedies. Let's face it, dating is hard, and starting over after a bad breakup is even harder. Still, as hard as it may be, if you lose confidence you'll make it ten times more terrifying.

Confidence is that essential ability to trust yourself, and convey that sense to others. After all, appearance is half the battle. And if you're not being quite so confident and happy with yourself, at least try your best to appear confident.

First of all, remember that posture counts, so stand up straight. Face forward and straighten your spine, it will denote purpose and strength. Also, don't forget to smile. It will make the other person feel more confident around you, and reflect a positive character. If you frown it will seem like you're worried or scared, and it will automatically make the other person nervous too.

Whether you're just on the first date or further along, it's very important to make eye contact when you talk to someone. Showing that you are not afraid to look someone in the eye means that you are strong and honest. Remember that re-occuring expression "Look me in the eye and tell me the truth"? It's not for nothing, one of the most blatant tip-offs to a lie is the person's inability to make eye contact.

When you're out on your date, think again about your posture. Whether you're standing or sitting, lean straight forward instead of pulling back. It will denote energy, strength and willingness. Leaning forward is a bit aggressive or at least assertive, while pulling back can be interpreted as defensive or passive.

Last but not least, a firm handshake will inspire the ultimate confidence. Whenever you enter a new situation, walk confidently to a person and put your hand out firmly. Careful though, you don't crush his or her hand when you shake it. A handshake is a symbol of confidence and respect. It will show that you are not afraid, you are friendly and engaging, and, most of all, you are equal. Try it, and you will discover that a firm handshake while you look somebody in the eye can work wonders, both in business and in personal situations.
