Should we install patio doors by ourselves or should we let others do it?

You can install patio screen doors really easy if  you have carpentry skills , some patience and you have the right tools or you can just buy your doors from a specialized store and let them do it if you are not sure that you can handle the situation.

Before beginning to install patio doors you need to be sure that you have everything that you might need in order to be able to do your job. First of all, you should know that you will need roofing paper, drip edge flashing, wood shims, silicone caulk, screws and nails, exterior and interior molding . You also need a really equipped toolbox: your toolbox must contain a circular saw, a hammer, a drill with a screwdriver bit, a level and a flat pry bar.

If you decide to install patio doors by yourself, you should first search a door which suits your climate, your situation and which meets all your needs:

  • if you live in a place where the winters are really cold, you should try to install patio doors which are thermally insulated - these are usually made of glass. If you install patio doors which are thermally insulated you can be sure that they will be helpful, as they will keep your room warm in winter and cool in summer.
  • try to install patio doors which seal tightly when they are closed.
  • if you live in a place where summers are hot and you usually do not keep our doors and your windows closed, be sure that the screen patio doors seal tightly, because you do not want bugs or mosquitoes to visit you!

If you decide to install patio doors by yourself, there are a few steps that need to be followed:

  • first, frame the opening;
  • cut the sliding;
  • seal the opening;
  • position and shim the patio door;
  • anchor the patio door;
  • seal the patio door.

Each of these steps has its own features, and if you do not respect them properly, you may install your patio doors in a wrong way! So, if you are not sure about your carpentry skills, before deciding to install patio doors by yourself, go to specialized stores in order to find the right doors and you might have the opportunity to find some stores which install patio doors too.

There are stores which do it for free (the assembly is included in the door’s price) or, you can find stores which have a certain price for the installation.

Sometimes it is better to let them come to your house and install your doors, because they have the necessary experience, they have the right tools and they know how to install patio doors in order to work properly. There are a few basic steps which should be respected when you install patio doors and if you do not have the right skills, you might have the bad luck to mess things up: your doors might not close properly or they can even not open. This is why, if you do not have the necessary experience, it would be better to call someone to install patio doors for you, even if you have to pay some extra money. http://www.patiodoorsprices.com/ is a website which provides more info about patio doors.

    Most of the sliding door hardware by Johnson Hardware does not require a bottom track. Instead they use a small guide placed on the floor only where the shutters or doors would overlap when closed.
